The ‘Galerie d’Apollon’ (Gallery of Apollo) in the Louvre was originally a reception gallery designed for Louis XIV. A mirror of the grandeur of the kingdom, it served as a model for the ‘Galerie des Glaces’ at the Château de Versailles. A silver wrought iron gate gives access to the gallery from the vestibule. Dated around 1646-1650, it comes from the Château de Maisons, in Maisons-Laffitte, where it adorned the main entrance hall. Under the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, the art of ironwork flourished and gained its place in the decorations of the Château de Versailles and in all the buildings of the period.
