The summer soundscape of Provence is dominated by the sexual call of the male cicadas, which enchant or deafen both walkers and residents. The females evaluate the songs before deciding, and the competition is tough. The dominant males sing the loudest and longest, starting earlier in the morning and finishing later in the evening, before and after the collective choir. The emergency is real as the cicada has a very short aerial lifespan, from 2 to 4 weeks for the gray cicada which, contrary to the fable, dies at the end of summer and therefore has no risk of going to cry famine to the ant's, its neighbor.
