A living and sensitive organ

The tortoise's shell is not an inert armor that the reptile carries on its back. Its inner part is composed of around sixty bones traversed by nerves and blood vessels, making it a living and sensitive organ. The keratinized scales on its outer face are concentrically striated starting from the central areola. These striae, which may fade over time, help to some extent determine the age of the tortoise.
