About 9 miles (15 km) from Narbonne stands the picturesque old abbey of Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide. Founded at the end of the 11th century by Benedictine monks, it is now open to the public throughout the year. It can be discovered through guided or thematic tours. The ensemble notably includes the 12th-century abbey church with modern stained-glass windows, the cloister, and its Romanesque columns, as well as a rose garden of 2,500 bushes.
