The limestone massif of the Sainte-Victoire mountain (3,316 ft / 1,011 m) is known worldwide for having been represented in some sixty works by the painter Paul Cézanne. Located east of Aix-en-Provence, it stretches from west to east over 11 mi (18 km) long and 3 mi (5 km) wide between the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var departments. At the western end of the Sainte-Victoire mountain stands a 62 ft high (19 m) cross known as the Croix de Provence and built in 1875 on a 3,103 ft high (946 m) peak. Visible for miles around, it is surrounded by a peripheral bench offering a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
