A lifetime of danger

While the only defense of the cicada during its aerial life is camouflage, it is threatened by predators at all stages of its development. The mites attack its eggs and empty them of their content. At the larval stage, it is the victim of centipedes or ants. When emerging from underground, it is particularly vulnerable during its imago before being able to spread its wings and, once adult, becomes the prey of many insects and birds. Males are much more exposed than females since their song indicates their position.
