Orient Lake and its surrounding forest play an essential part in the continuity of birdlife. The drops in waters' level in autumn and spring release vast mudflats that fill with small fish and frogs. They attract large waders that feed on them. In addition, Orient Lake stands inside a migratory corridor. Every year, common cranes (Grus Grus) and wild geese (Anser) stop to rest on its banks. They also constitute the preferred nesting site of the black stork (Ciconia nigra).
