According to the legend, the women of Rurutu Island, in the Austral archipelago, became experts in the art of braiding by copying the objects woven by Hina, the fairy-fingered female cannibal of Rurutu. The bottom of the cave in which she lived as a recluse was lined with objects and mats woven with wild pandanus.
