Legend has it that in the beginning a vast forest stretched around Mont Tombe. A divine storm and an earthquake are said to have swept away the trees and turned the rugged rock into an islet surrounded by the sea at high tide. In any case, the successive constructions on the rock have each been an architectural and technical feat. An impregnable citadel, so complex that one ends up believing that only divine intervention could have made it possible.
