Almost perfectly circular, with a diameter of about 2,624 feet (800 metres) and a surface area of 0.17 sq. miles (44 hectares), Lake Pavin is 301 feet (92 metres) deep, making it the deepest lake in Auvergne; it contains about 13 million cubic metres of water. According to a hydrogeological study, the lake’s catchment basin is much larger than its crater. It includes forests (26%), agricultural land (74%), and covers a total area of 1,04 sq. miles (270 hectares).
