The Château du Haut de Villarceaux dominates the old medieval and Renaissance buildings preserved after 1755. A vertiginous 530-metre descent seems to plunge into the large pond at its feet. In the 18th century, a large French park sheltered a green theatre where plays were held on reception evenings. Guests could also stroll through the ‘parterre sur l’eau’ (the only example still preserved in France today) of the lower manor. Whilst they were not equal to those of Versailles, the gardens of Villarceaux nevertheless reveal the calibre of the owners.
