A large canvas area on a short mast

The horn sail is characteristic of the gaff rig and allows a short mast to carry a large canvas area. It takes its name from the yard, known as horn. The lower end of the horn, resting on the mast, pivots along the axis of the mast and increases the performance of the sail by bringing its entire surface behind the mast and freeing its front part for the installation of a staysail and jibs. The rigging of the arrow in the upper part further increases the sails of auric ketches like the Don du Vent.
