Due to its inhospitable nature, Camargue has never been densely populated. Its space was traditionally divided into large estates traversed by the gardians and their herds. They have now adapted to the parceling of the territory and the enclosure of the grazing areas. Since the 1990s, a sustainable evolution has indeed begun through the transformation of cultivated rice fields into reed beds, grazed marshes, and semi-extensive pastures following the establishment of fences.
