With nearly 2,500 dedicated farms, the horse is the symbol of the Orne department, and its trotters regularly excel in the biggest races. The horse field directly employs 2,700 people, whether for training or breeding, and nearly 6,000 indirectly. The local stud farms are renowned for their Thoroughbreds they export to countries such as England and the USA. The Orne department is the second biggest producer for gallop races, and France has the largest number of racetracks in Europe (238, including 221 for trotting).
