In addition to regulating the course of the Durance, the dam at the origin of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon supplies power to 16 hydroelectric power stations. It also allows irrigation of 370,660 acres (150,000 ha) of cultivated land via the Durance canal. Finally, the lake supplies drinking and industrial water to the towns of Sisteron and Marseille as well as many municipalities in the Var department and on the coast.
