One hundred and three miles (166.5 km) long, the Verdon takes its source in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence at 8,070 feet (2,460 meters) above sea level, at the foot of the Tête de la Sestrière, between the Col d’Allos and the Pic des Trois-Évêchés. It forms at the confluence of three torrents: the ‘Verdon de la Foux’ coming down from the Trois-Évêchés mountain, the torrent of Bouchier descending from the massif of Mont Pelat and the Chadoulin, an emissary of the lake of Allos.
