Meet the common crane

The common crane (Grus grus) is a large bird of the Gruidae family. The period between mid-October and mid-March is ideal for observing them at Lac du Der-Chantecoq, in the Grand Est region. The common crane is an early animal, and bird enthusiasts have to be present before dawn to watch it. To the southeast of the lake, the Giffaumont-Champaubert levee constitutes the best point of view, as it extends in the middle of the bird's flight path. With its 12,355 acres (5,000 ha), Lac du Der-Chantecoq is the common crane's main stationing area in Europe. In the morning, the birds leave their haven to feed in the neighboring fields up to several miles away.
