On 6 February 1661, the upper floor of the ‘Petite Galerie’, built under Henry IV, was destroyed by fire. His grandson, Louis XIV, entrusted its reconstruction to his first architect, Louis Le Vau. His mission was to give it even more splendour. The interior decoration was entrusted to Charles Le Brun, who designed a decor on the theme of Apollo: the ‘Galerie des Rois’ was renamed ‘Galerie d’Apollon’. It was with this decoration that Louis XIV became the Sun King. However, the construction of Versailles mobilised more and more artists and the Gallery of Apollo remained unfinished. The decoration was not completed until 1851.
