In French, the term palangrier designates both the fishing boat using the longline as a catching gear and the fisherman practicing longline fishing. A palangre is a very long line with numerous hooks which is usually set horizontally in the water column. It can rest on the seabed or float on the surface. This technique is notably used for bass, sea bream, snapper, grouper, ling, halibut, swordfish, and tuna fishing.
