The song of the gray cicadas (Cicada orni) of Provence is associated with pine forests, olive trees, and summer heat. It is the loudest, most common, and most recognized in southern France. However, the opportunities to see the cicadas that produce it are rare as they blend with the bark of the trunk or the branches that support them. When we succeed in distinguishing a cicada before it turns silent, it is identifiable by the eleven black dots present on each of its front wings. As for its color, it is not uniformly gray but rather brown-gray with yellowish or green undertones.
