Located north of the tree line boundary, the Canadian Arctic often appears as a flat, monotonous territory, covered with snow most of the year and deprived of vegetation. If it extends as far as the eye can see, it is nevertheless not devoid of relief and also shelters many lakes and rivers at the bottom of wide valleys. Related to geology, the landscape diversity also depends on microclimates of great ecological importance.
