The silhouette of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is visible from far. It is an unmissable part of the landscapes of central Alsace. The imposing 203 ft (62 m) keep continues to watch over the plain. A 150 steps staircase leads to its summit. Its copper roof was torn off in a storm in 2011 and renovated. The imperial eagle, added by the architect Bodo Ebhardt, still sits at its top. In 1995, a parchment to the glory of Kaiser Wilhelm II dating from 1900 was discovered hidden inside.
