The castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg stands on a rocky outcrop. Its large perimeter walls surround a plot of land 885 ft long (270 m) and 131 ft wide (40 m) on average. The princes' lodgings and the great dungeon's tower occupy the center. In the lower courtyard, an inn used to welcome visitors whose horses were taken care of by a blacksmith. A Renaissance hexagonal staircase provides access to the upper floors, adorned with balconies decorated with frescoes of knights. The courtyard offers a clear view over the entire south facade of the castle.
