The Comtois is a horse specific to Franche-Comté, mainly present in France and Switzerland, which borders the region. Its French breeding is more specifically established around Maîche on the pine forested plateaus of the Doubs, in the Jura massif, hence its other name of 'Maîchard' horse of the Haut-Doubs plateaus. The rich pastures make it possible to breed quality horses.
