The origins of the municipality of Banyuls-Sur-Mer allegedly go back to the year 1074. The town, then known as Bannils de Maritimo, later became Banyuls del Marende in 1674 and Banyuls de la Marenda in the 19th century. The current city of Banyuls-Sur-Mer was not attached to the Kingdom of France until 1659. It first depended on the Kingdoms of Aragon and Majorca from the 12th to the 14th centuries before becoming a province of the Kingdom of Castile. The signing of the Treaty of the Pyrenees between Louis XIV of France and Philip IV of Spain separated Catalonia in two and made Banyuls a French town. However, it took several centuries for the inhabitants to eventually adopt the language and accept the authority of their new homeland.
