A historic heart between two churches

The medieval village of Pierrefeu-du-Var is clinging to the southern slope of Sainte-Croix hill, once dominated by a feudal castle destroyed during the French Wars of Religion of the 16th century. The Sainte-Croix chapel, restored in 1993, today stands at the top of the village at an altitude of 501.9 ft (153 m), on the site of the former castle. It was built in the 17th century and entrusted to a confraternity of white penitents. As for the parish church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, it was implanted halfway up the hill. The historic heart of Pierrefeu-du-Var stretches from the chapel to the church.
