A highly urbanized and active coastline

0
The Martinican coastline represents nearly 333 miles (536 km) of coastal length, or 18 % of the island's territory. It covers 130 square miles (210 km²) and involves 27 municipalities out of the 34 in the overseas department. Highly urbanized, it is home to 106,553 inhabitants, i.e. 32 % of the Martinican population and includes 32 % of all buildings (nearly 109,000 constructions). The 47 activity zones distributed along the coast represent 71 % of Martinique's activity zones. Most of the administrative structures (69 %) are also located there. Despite the extent of the urbanized areas, the coastline nevertheless retains 87 square miles (141 km²) of protected areas and 23,381 acres (9,462 ha) of natural areas (forests, mangroves, wetlands) preserved under the Loi Littoral (Coastal Act) as well as numerous agricultural zones.
