The cultivated vine, which belongs to the same ‘Vitis vinifera’ species as the wild vine, is called ‘Vitis vinifera subsp.vinifera’. During the domestication of the vine, humans selected the specific morphological characteristics that were favourable to its cultivation and exploitation. One of these characteristics was to be hermaphroditic, meaning that the same plant bore both male and female flowers. Furthermore, the cultivated vine had larger bunches, larger berries, and longer seeds than wild vine.
