Montmartre always has had a village-type atmosphere that differentiates it from the rest of Paris. It has numerous private gardens and vineyards like the Clos Montmartre grown every year. Already present in the 1930s, they remind visitors that Montmartre used to be a rural district. A dozen mills then thrived on the Butte Montmartre, two of which still stand today. The cobbled streets and flowered balconies give the neighborhood its unique character and provide a glimpse of the Paris of yesteryear.
