The town of Saint-Tropez extends on the south-eastern coast of the Var department, at the bottom of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez closed by the eponymous peninsula. It forms a crescent of 3.7 mi (6 km) by 2.4 mi (4 km) around the Bay of Canebiers. The territory of Saint-Tropez, with an area of 2,763 acres (1,118 ha), rises from sea level to 377 ft (115 m). The coastal city is located at the beginning of a hilly area, and its historical heart leans against a hill facing the sea north of the peninsula, which geographically and geologically belongs to the Massif des Maures.
