A glazed dome built in 1865

Alençon's Halle au Blé (wheat market) was built in 1806 under Napoleon by Joseph Berthélémy on the site of a convent. Opened in 1812, it welcomed 32 shops in 1815. The building later suffered fires, saw its roof collapse, and also served as a garrison. In 1865, the architect Charles Arnoul and the engineer Charles Croquefer built the Halle au Blé's glazed dome on the occasion of an industrial exhibition.
