The 656 feet (200 metres) high Crescent Towers visible in the foreground of this photo have become the iconic landmark of Qatar. They are located in Lusail, a new city emerging from the desert in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The country has decided to invest 45 billion dollars in Lusail, a fifth of the overall budget for the event. Linked to Doha by urban highways and tunnels, the futuristic hyper-connected city spread over 14.7 mi² (38 km²) is on the way to becoming the country’s third largest city. Lusail comprises nineteen business and residential districts, shopping centres and hotels designed to accommodate 250,000 people. At the heart of the city, the 80,000-seat Iconic Stadium hosted the FIFA World Cup final on 18 December.
