Giant sequoias are mostly found in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, United States. They are the tallest trees in the world in terms of volume. The Ribeauvillé forest, near Riquewihr, has had one since 1856. It was planted by Brigadier Denny, to celebrate the birth of the son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. The prefect's ordinance specified that it was about symbolizing the bright future and incoming prosperity of France. The tree was 187 ft (57 m) high and 16 ft (5 m) in circumference in 2019.
