A gate erected against pillagers

In 1362, a group of pillagers attacked the town of Mirepoix in the Ariège department and set a fire that destroyed its southern part. Ten years later, the local authorities hence decided to build a new protective enclosure consisting of solid walls and four fortified gates. Today, the Porte d'Aval constitutes the only vestige of the fortifications of Mirepoix and still shows traces of a portcullis.
