The vast abbey church of Cluny III (photo) was largely financed by the King of Spain Alfonso VI of León in gratitude for the services provided by the Cluniacs and because he had married the niece of the abbot of the time, Hugues de Cluny. Cluny Abbey used to ask the lords to send knights to fight the Saracens and help Alfonso VI in his reconquest of the territories lost to the Muslims. After the reconquest of Toledo in 1085, Alfonso VI hence generously financed the abbey thanks to the properties taken back. The treasure of the Spanish city thus allowed the launching of the colossal construction sites that resulted in Cluny III, the largest religious building in the Christian West.
