The Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland) all have ancient evidence – prehistoric paintings, artefacts, pieces of skis made of bone or wood – of the use of cross-country skiing in ancient times. Over the centuries, the practical function of skiing gave way to the sporting and recreational aspect. The first cross-country ski race was held in Tromso (Norway) in 1776. Competitions were held from 1843 in Norway, 1877 in Sweden and 1879 in Finland. The 1924 Chamonix Olympic Games included cross-country skiing in the Nordic combined. It became a fully-fledged discipline in 1988.
