Until the extension of the Unterlinden Museum in 2015, the ‘Guernica’ tapestry was rarely exhibited to the public because it was too fragile. Installed on the ground floor of the contemporary building, Jacqueline de La Baume-Dürrbach’s tapestry sits behind glass, protected from the ravages of time, in a space where light, humidity, and temperature are regulated so as not to damage it. The tapestry is slightly tilted, at 12 degrees, to lighten the weight on the scratch that holds it in place along its entire length. It is protected from the metal wall by a polyethylene film as thermal insulation.
