The Massif des Maures is one of the great Mediterranean forest massifs and a hotbed of biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin. Cork oak, chestnut, green or pubescent oak, and pine groves grow on the siliceous soils of the Var coastline, strongly subject to the pressure of fires and urbanization. The Plaine des Maures Nature Reserve, created in 2009, and the Southern Region Conservatory of Natural Areas now manage and protect the forest and the maquis.
