The cloister of the Dominican convent in Unterlinden was built after the conventual church in the second half of the 13th century. It consists of four timbered galleries forming an almost perfect square and opening onto a garden. This Gothic monastery can be regarded as a founding building which influenced the entire architecture of the Upper Rhine mendicant orders. In the 18th century, a floor was added to the cloister to give it more living space. New cells for the nuns were built. The former monastery was converted into a museum in 1849.
