A fortress circled by a cycle path

The castle of Arques-la-Bataille dates from the 12th century. Its defensive architecture dominates the valleys of Varenne, Béthune, and Eaulne. Surrounded by ditches and an artillery bastion, it experienced a siege by William the Conqueror and later the Hundred Years' War before being the site of Henry IV's victory over the League in 1589. Imposing ruins remain today, and a cycle path allows observing the old feudal fortress.
