A fortified city

The northern fortifications of Riquewihr date back to 1291. It consisted, among other things, of corner towers, three of which have been preserved: The Thieve's Tower, the Helleturm and the Anabaptists. These fortifications have undergone numerous modifications over time. Following the development of firearms, the city of Riquewihr reinforced its western defenses around 1500. The first enclosure was enhanced, and a second rampart was built. At the beginning of the 17th century, two bastions were added to the corners of the fortifications.
