The fortified city of Aigues-Mortes and its ramparts extend within the Petite Camargue in the Gard department. The town is located at the southern tip of the department in the Occitania region and is home to a little more than 8,500 inhabitants. The municipal territory covers 22 square miles (58 km²) and includes the internationally renowned Salins d'Aigues-Mortes. These salt marshes are a worldwide symbol of Camargue's salt production.
