The Valentré bridge of Cahors, or Pont du Diable (Devil's bridge), is a defensive bridge built in the 19th century. Its six arches over the Lot (plus two on land) are bristling with crenelated spouts. The bridge's three fortified machicolated towers, 131 ft (40 m) high, guaranteed against any invasion attempt by the river. The western tower houses a chapel dedicated to the Virgin. The Via Podiensis leading to Compostela crosses the Valentré bridge, which has become pedestrian, and made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
