A fort on a glacial lock in the Guil valley

Fort Queyras is a former fortified castle from the second half of the 13th century (towers, courtyard, upper courtyard, keep, walkway, drawbridge) bastioned by Vauban in the 17th century. Located on a glacial lock in the municipality of Château-Ville-Vieille, in the Hautes-Alpes department, it barred the Guil valley and protected the Haut-Dauphiné against Savoyard or Provençal incursions while monitoring the Escarton of Queyras. Disarmed during the Second World War and then listed as a Historical Monument in 1948, the fort was returned to civilian life in 1967. It became a private property of 21,325 square feet (6,500 m²) partially open to visitors which was resold at auction for 661 000 euros in 2021.
