A former Temple of Reason

In Allouville-Bellefosse, the dean of the oaks of France was probably a contemporary of Charlemagne. It would have seen William the Conqueror stopping under its branches on the way to England. In 1696, Father Jacques Delalande of Détroit slipped a pious image dedicated to Our Lady of Peace into the cavity that formed inside its trunk. The hole became a shrine, and a second one opened at the top. The tree was saved from destruction during the Revolution and baptized Temple of Reason for a time. Under Napoleon III, a statue of the Virgin Mary was donated by Empress Eugenia. The oak of Allouville was listed as a Historical Monument in 1932.
