Nowadays, silver mines can be found in South America (Mexico, Peru, Chile), Australia, and China. In the Vosges mountain, the Saint-Jean vein was discovered in the 9th century, but mining did not begin until 1549. At the time, the miners only had rudimentary tools (pointerolles, hammers) and the work was exhausting to say the least. The Saint-Jean Engelsbourg/Tellure silver mine closed for good in 1908. The Tellure Mining Park offers an immersion into the life of the miners in the 16th century. An underground via ferrata with cables, steps and ladders allows you to complete six different caving routes, accompanied by experienced instructors.
