The flora of Martinique has 2,906 species, including 396 tree varieties. Among them, there is a majority of 2,646 species of flowering plants or Angiosperms, of which 1,423 are autochthonous, that is to say that they were present on the island before the arrival of man. These plants have reproductive organs grouped in a flower and seeds wrapped in a fruit. They differ from gymnosperms, whose seeds are bare, and from the 259 species of pteridophytes (ferns and allied plants), whose reproductive organs are spores that produce neither fruits nor seeds. Flowering plants dominate the tropical natural environments of Martinique, nicknamed Madinina, the island of flowers, by the indigenous populations. They are essentially terrestrial, though some marine species feed the turtles.
