The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is a large fish of the Xiphiidae family that measures 9.8 to 16.4 ft (3 to 5 m) and weighs 771 to 1,102 lbs (350 to 500 kg) in adulthood. It owes its name (gladius) to the appearance of its rostrum, similar to the blade of a sword as well as its ability to cut through water with ease and speed. The impressive rostrum of the swordfish represents a third of its total length.
