The white marble crosses in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial of Colleville-sur-Mer each indicate the family name, first name, state of origin, division, rank, and date of death of the soldier. Some are also shaped like Stars of David, while others bear the words known only to God in the case of unidentified men. Behind the memorial and its imposing statue, the Jardin du Souvenir (Garden of Remembrance) lines up the names of 1,557 missing soldiers. Today, a commission keeps on conducting research.
