A fief sold in paréage during the Renaissance

The historic heart of the village of Rustrel in the Vaucluse department extends around its 17th-century castle, now occupied by the town hall. The city's coat of arms and its motto, the sword is my right, recall the eventful history of this stronghold occupied by Protestants during the French Wars of Religion and passed from the County of Forcalquier in the 12th century to that of Provence before becoming a seigneury of Simiane, Eyroux and then of Apt. The community of Apt eventually sold the fief in paréage to various co-lords, a relatively common practice during the Renaissance.
